The Grand Luang Prabang

This is one hotel in Luang Prabang where space is not an issue.

It sits on a sprawling property at the bank of the Mekong River. Though quite far from the city centre and its attractions, this distance is its major strength. The serenity of the place is matched only by the panoramic views that one can have while sitting at their restaurant right on the side of the river.

The architecture speaks French, with hints here and there of Laotian influence. The hotel’s lay-out is well thought of, including how the restaurant is positioned against the backdrop of the Mekong river, how the pool is facing a large tree, and how buildings are interconnected by covered alleyways that eventually burst into the grandeur of the sunny skies.

The hotel was once part of the Xiengkeo Palace (or Vang Xieng Keo). Built in 1920, it served as the royal residence for the Lao nationalist hero, Prince Phetsarath Ratanavongsa. While the rest of the buildigns were added, the palace itself is at the center of the property, that now serves as a museum dedicated to the prince.

The surroundings are just beautiful that you can just practically stay at the place for three nights, without having to go away to the night market or visit the waterfalls. It’s the kind of hotel that makes you stay than leave, and this is complemented by the warm service of its staff.

If you want a retreat from the noise of the world, this property is waiting for you. I highly recommend.
