I rented a car while visiting Dumaguete, to explore nearby towns and places of interest. This morning, I headed to Dauin to visit the San Nicolas de Tolentino church and because I was hungry, I searched for a cafe nearby and Descansa is on top of the list. It’s three blocks away from the church so I thought it would be a good stop.

Descansa in Dauin has minimalist architecture, airy and quiet, with a large lawn where I can imagine sitting on a cool breezy afternoon with an iced coffee on hand. The architecture is the first thing that catches you— a little heritage-inspired, with warm wood and details that make the place feel thoughtfully built rather than simply decorated. It is the kind of café where you can sit for a while without feeling rushed. The space is relaxed, clean, and very easy on the eyes.

Then there is the beach. It is right there, quiet and wide, with the sea doing most of the work in making the place feel special. The ocean breeze helps, especially when Dauin gets warm, and you can just look out at the water while waiting for your food. Sometimes the view is enough. Well, not entirely enough. You still need coffee.

This time, I ordered banana and wallnut pancakes and Spanish latte. The pancakes were a good breakfast choice—simple, comforting, and filling. Then to the barista’s horror, I said I wanted ube ice cream on the side. It made the combination more delicious. The coffee was also good, the kind you want to drink slowly while staring at the sea and pretending you have nowhere else to be. I will probably come back, not only for the food, but for the whole excuse of sitting by the beach with coffee in hand.

Next time, I’d likely come in the afternoon with a book in hand. By the way, the service crew were all attentive and helpful. One more good reason to come back.
