I have lived in London for almost two years but have never been to Scotland. No shame. Part of it is that I really didn’t have much money to spare while studying at LSE. But the main reason was that I was trying very hard to survive daily Socratic debates and pass the exams.
So now, at 51, I braved Scotland- well, Edinburgh at this time- without even a plan. Very unlike me. But I got tired of planning trips already. So I just let my feet lead me.
The Trip
The trip to Edinburgh is a visual treat. Golden fields. The blue sea. White lighthouses. Bridge arches. What have you. See below. I let the pictures speak for themselves.

The City
Upon arrival, I just practically walked around to see the sites. Museums, bookshops, cafes, parks, buildings, and stores, all along cobblestone walkways. What more can you ask for? I was also fortunate that, while I was there, the private quarters of the Palace of Holyroodhouse were opened to the public after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Where I stayed the Most
I am a sucker for museums. So I stayed the whole time at the National Museum of Scotland.

Nearby, the Talbot Rice Gallery held a provocative exhibition of Anne Hardy’s work, one of Britain’s eccentrically gifted artists. So yes, while it was raining outside, I soaked myself in art.

The Upward Hikes
I hiked upwards on two occassions. I went to the famous Arthur’s Chair before it got burned the following day. I also went up Calton Hill on the other side. Both offer stunning views of the city and nearby areas, including the Firth of Forth on cleary days.

So that’s it. Without a plan. But still a lot covered. 🙂
