I am a big fan of Indonesian soups – from Sop Bontot, to Soto Betawi, and to the tangy Rawon. So when Dinita, a friend of mine, recommended Kaum Restaurant in Menteng, Jakarta, I never hesitated to go, as the menu features Tongseng Buntut and Garang Asam Iga.
I did not regret it.
First, my chosen starter: Gohu Ikan Tuna

Gohu Ikan Tuna, is referred to as Indonesian sashimi or ceviche, if you like (but to be honest, its more of the latter than the former). Originating from the Maluku islands, tuna is marinated in coconut oil, calamansi juice and fresh belimbi, mixed with kenari nuts and ginseng leaves. It is like the Philippine kinilaw, and so the taste is very close to home. The dish, though, instead of using coconut milk, uses coconut oil as the base of the sauce. It comes with rice crackers, and the salty crackers match very well with the sour and tangy taste of the fish. 10/10. Look at my hands:

And the highlight of the meal: Garang Asam Iga

Garang Asam Iga is a traditional Central Javanese soup that highlights the tender, braised beef ribs in a tangy, spicy, and savory broth. In this case, Kaum makes the soup very delicious, with a concoction of starfruit, green tomatoes, kedondong, green chili and sweet basil leaves. It was just heaven. 10/10. I paired it with red rice steamed to perfection. For drinks, I ordered Kanyit Asam, a sweet and sour drink made from turmeric and tamarind.

The place is nicely decorated with an open kitchen and a drinks bar with lazy seats. I went there for lunch, so no time for drinks. But I can imagine lounging in this place, enjoying good food and drinks, and a hearty conversation with friends.

Definitely recommended.
