Indonesia’s Museum Nasional Gets a Makeover

The 2024 renovation and restoration process of Museum Nasional is the best tribute that the country gave to this heritage institution. The museum, the country’s largest and oldest, was established in 1778, houses an impressive collection that essays the archipelago’s rich and vibrant history.

My friend Dinita recommended the place, and though she has not visited it yet after it closed in 2023 for a year-long makeover, she was confident that it has given proper treatment to the artifacts housed in the collection. So one rainy Saturday afternoon, I went and spent four long hours inside.

I won’t bore you with my narration. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Definitely worth a visit. If I only had more time and the patience to queue, I would have wanted to do this “Mengenal Paras Nusantara” activity, where you have your picture taken, and your features will be matched against a database of pictures of Indonesian race and heritage using artificial intelligence. I would have known if I was a Javanese, Sundanese, Batak, Bugis, Balinese, or others. Maybe next time.
