I am fortunate to be working with organisations whose choice of workshop venues really match the thinking process that I wanted them to go through. This practically means that they choose a place where they can enjoy the tranquility of nature, away from the noise of the city, and a green open space where they can go out, reflect, and enjoy some thinking space when the workshop gets tough.

This time we went to Embun Luxury Villas in Malaysia. And my, it was such a good find. (Thank you Jo-ann!)

Embun Luxury Villas is in Janda Baik, is on a green location an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur. The location makes you feel like you are embraced by nature. Janda Baik’s surroundings make it an ideal escape from the city and a good space to engage in a thinking exercise.

The villas here are designed to reflect elegant simplicity. Each villa combines traditional Malaysian aesthetics with modern comforts that’s understated and luxurious at the same time. The design lets you feel connected to nature —a balance of wide, open spaces, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the beauty of the forest. The interiors feel intentional, from the brown textures to the furniture and decorative pieces that tell stories of local artisanship. Staying in one of these villas feels like you’ve stepped into a well-curated sanctuary.

Our session hall was the game room that they converted into a long table with nice comfortable chairs. It’s located just a few steps away from the restaurant, and just beside the pool. They set up our morning and afternoon tea in the gazebo just a stone throw away from the workshop room, making it easy to switch from pens and markers to coffee cups and then back.

Embun Villas’ food is a joy on its own. Breakfast is a spread of local flavors. The choices look and taste homemade, almost like a family member prepared it for you. Though I am not a heavy breakfast eater, I tried the nasi lemak and it was undeniably good. For dinner, I ate Ayam Pecek, that has the taste of ginger and other spices all over it. I had my congee on my first day, and it was really good, with all the right condiments. It’s not just about filling up; it’s about connecting with the soul of the place, one delicious plate at a time.

Finally, the service team is just awesome. They doesn’t just provide a service; they make you feel like a welcome guest in their home. They somehow manage to balance attentiveness with respect for your privacy. They’re knowledgeable too—ready to suggest a nearby trail or recommend a local restaurant.

If you’re looking for a workshop venue that renews, relaxes, and revives, Embun Luxury Villas is a good choice. Our workshop was the most gruelling one, but with Embun Luxury Villas, it became light, enjoyable, and productive. I always believe a place has a lot of impact on meetings and workshops. Embun Luxury Villas surely did a positive impact on me and the rest of the team that week.

I’d probably bring my family here – not for a workshop but for a lazy relaxing vacation. Will find the right time soon.
