Funny Lion Comforts in Coron

I was looking for a boutique resort in Coron and chanced upon the brand The Funny Lion, with a bold claim that it’s the number one hotel in Palawan. I was intrigued by the name, but was also impressed by shiny website. So when my wife and I wanted to spend a few days in Coron town before we head off to Dimakya Island for our stay at Discovery Coron, I took the risk to book The Funny Lion Coron though I do not really know the brand nor the name.

We booked a Mara Room because based on website information, the size of the room is quite generous and it has direct access to the property’s second pool (which looks practically like a lap pool of a slightly-narrow size).

We arrived on a rainy afternoon, and from the outside, the property is not in any way impressive. But when the front desk attendant toured us around the property, I was amazed by the use of space and the modern design.

Our Room

The website description was quite on spot. We had a room that opened right onto the pool. Just open the sliding doors, and you can jump in—or just enjoy the view while you sip your morning coffee. The room is clean and cozy, with a super comfortable bed and everything you need for a relaxing stay. The bathroom is spotless, and there’s plenty of space to unpack and settle in. It’s the kind of room where you can really unwind after a day of island hopping.

But there was a typhoon i affecting northern Philippines (Palawan included) and so all island hopping activities were cancelled. If we lived in a cramped space, it would have made me really upset. But The Funny Lion has a lot of public and open spaces that being trapped inside the hotel premises for most of the two days we were there did not make us feel bored or constrained. We read, swam, ate, roamed around, watched TV, played games.

The Food

There are three outlets to choose from – Hunt, the main and also breakfast restaurant; Pride Rock Deck, the roofdeck bar, and Cinco Grande, the garden resto that serves Mexican-inspired fairs.

  • Pride Rock Deck: The bar on the top floor is the best place to watch the sunset in Coron. The drinks are great and the view is beautiful. The bartenders are friendly and quick to remember your favorites. It has two jacuzzis on each end.
  • Hunt: This is where you have breakfast, and honestly, it’s a highlight of the day. The breads are fresh, the coffee is strong. Everything I tried here was tasty, and the staff are always on top of things—you never have to wait long or ask twice.
  • Cinco Grande: The carnitas are flavorful, the salsa has a real kick, and the margaritas are spot-on. It’s the perfect place for a casual meal after a swim.

The Little Touches

What really makes The Funny Lion stand out are the small details. When you arrive, they give you a welcome bag with a bracelet and bandanna—simple but fun. Every day, you get a refill of fresh juice in your room, which is a lifesaver after a hot day out. And every night at turndown, there’s a local sweet waiting for you. It’s these little things that make a big difference and make you feel looked after.

The People

The staff here are some of the nicest I’ve met. They remember your name, your preferences, and often know what you need before you even ask. It’s not forced or scripted—it just feels natural. You can tell they genuinely care about making your stay as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

The Funny Lion Coron is a fantastic place to stay. The rooms are comfortable, the food is consistently good, and all the small touches show how much the staff care about their guests. It’s somewhere I’d happily return to and recommend to friends looking for a worry-free, welcoming experience in Coron.
