I had an initial difficult time finding Chocolate Garden, because the place where the TukTuk driver dropped me only had a sign in Khmer and a set of English words that says “simply everything”. But the driver was right. This wide open space, with a few buildings here and there that houses a souvenir shop, a cafe, and a library is indeed the Chocolate Garden.

My first stop was the souvenir shop that sells some of the finest work of local Cambodian artists – from clothing to accessories to household items. It is such a joy to watch a place bursting with creativity.

Second stop was the building that has a mini library and a craft space. It was also, I think, an extension of the coffee shop as it has many tables in it where people can lounge and just enjoy a lazy afternoon. It was a two-storey building made of wood and in a traditional Khmer architecture.

Third and final stop is the cafe, where I ordered a chocolate drink and a donut. The selection is okay but not phenomenal. I was not disappointed, as the spirit of the place is more than enough.

It was the highlight of my afternoon. I stayed there for an hour or two, read a chapter of a book and wrote a few entries on my journal.
I enjoy spaces such as this. Serene, comforting, and stimulating. They are a joy to the senses, and feels like a warm hug to a tired soul.
Maybe creating something like this in Bohol?
Why not? There are no limits to dreaming.
Amen.
