Georgia At Christmastime

Written by:

Georgia is not an obvious Christmas holiday destination for many people, so a friend of mine asked me, “How did you pick going there?” Since visiting the country for the first time, I have always wanted to bring my wife and kids here. And I am just too glad we spent it here for several reasons.

First, Christmas and New Year are big celebrations here. The streets are lighted up. We have seen at least three humongous Christmas trees, and the local Catholic church had a Christmas concert on Christmas Eve and a mass right after. How cool is that?

Second, the historical sites here are impressive, especially the catacombs in Uplistsikhe, the David Gareji Monastery in Kakheti, and the beautiful town of Signaghi, to name a few. For these trips, we are too glad to find a company that’s very responsive with very knowledgeable tour guides and excellent service. Shout out to FriendlyGe and to our amazing tourguides Jonas and Guram.

Third, the food is delicious, and good wine is cheap. Steak prices rival Argentina’s. And, of course, there is that Kachapuri, my daughter’s favourite, khinkali (my favourite), Dru’s favourite mtsvadi, and Arlen’s favourite bread, the shoti.

Fourth, the art galleries do not disappoint. Our favourite is the Museum of Fine Arts, with its glass stairs and elevators. The gallery has a collection of the works of Georgia’s finest women artists.

Fifth, there is the snow and the whole set of activities that come with it. The Kazbegi and Gudairi mountains are just beautiful.

Sixth, the beauty of nature is everywhere. From waterfalls to deserts to valleys and mountains, from urban gardens to rural enclaves. God is everywhere.

Finally, the people are just awesome. Behind that thick accent is a friendly spirit.
Cheers to all the drivers, waiters, tour operators, waiters and waitresses, chambermaids, and everyone who made our stay the best experience.

Happy New Year!
