For several years I was not really enticed visiting Hua Hin in Thailand, primarily because I know the beach is not that good and my standards are high because for more than 15 years I live in Bohol, in the Philippines. But this time around we wanted to go to the beach before my son leaves for Cebu and Hua Hin is one of the closest places we can go to (accessible by car, no more plane rides). So because we were able to save on plane rides (for Krabi, or Koh Samui), I decided to book a relatively expensive resort that has a beach front and stumbled on Anantara Hua Hin.

The resort’s architecture was impressive – drawing heavily on traditional Thai design. The good thing about the place is it seamlessly integrates with nature, with pathways that surrounds you with tropical greenery and ponds dotted with lotus flowers (which I suspect were man-made but nevertheless looked “natural” with the passing of time).

The rooms were comfortable, with wood and earth colors as the dominant palate. The beds were perfect and amenities were on the luxurious side. Because my wife is not very keen about a room that faces a lagoon (with mosquitoes and whatever lies underneat the water lilies), we opted for a garden room with a veranda that opens directly into lush greenery and a view of the beach.

As I expected, the beach was a disappointment. It’s gray, relatively dirty, and “unswimmable”. The many pools made up for that but then, pools are different so if you are looking for a nice beach, then this property will not be the best choice.
What we enjoyed, however, were the in-resort curated experiences. At the prodding of our daughter, we arranged for an afternoon picnic in one of the resort gardens. And we were not disappointed. The food and drinks selection was just right (even more than what expected) – with a range of fruits, savoury and sweet snacks, and a magnificent set-up of low tables, parasols, and throw pillows. I highly recommend this experience.

Like most Anantaras all over the world, Anantara Hua Hin keeps a high standard for hospitality. The staff’s attention to detail is admirable, and their warmth is genuine. From personalized greetings to remembering your preferences, their goal is to make your stay unforgettable. Room service is prompt, the housekeeping meticulous, and the concierge team goes above and beyond to ensure that your itinerary aligns with your needs.
While we were there, some renovation work was ongoing. The restaurant directly fronting the beach was closed. But the property is huge enough to miss this lack, including a sufficient biking area, tennis courts and a gym that’s equipped with basic equipment.
Because the beach is not really that good at this area, we will not probably come back, as there are other alternatives. However, if beach quality is not an issue for you, I am pretty sure the rest of what Anantara Hua Hin can offer will be sufficient for a good relaxing holiday.
