Special occasions for us as a family highlight (and thus require) a celebration of good food and meaningful conversations. They can include birthdays, school milestones for our kids, or welcoming a guest to our new second home—Bangkok, Thailand. For the last three years or so, our go-to place for these special occasions has been Ma Maison, just at the back of the upscale mall Central Embassy.
For what reason? The place and the food.
The Ma Maison website describes the restaurant as follows – and I think it captures very well my opinion of the place:
The intimate dining space is surrounded by century-old trees and a manicured lawn, where guests can experience authentic Thai home-cooked dishes. Some of the recipes date back to the 1920s when Khunying Sinn, Nai Lert’s beloved wife, passionately experimented with homegrown herbs and vegetables to create her own unique recipes. Her skills and natural talent made many dishes at Nai Lert Park Heritage Home popular to this day, namely Nai Lert Park’s crispy vermicelli soup with shredded pork and shrimp, steamed rice and fish curry in banana leaves, and many more sumptuous dishes.
Today, Ma Maison proudly serves the Nai Lert family’s home-cooked recipes, which have been appreciated from generation to generation. The family values the importance of dining, as food brings people together on many different occasions. The idea behind this dining experience is to create a true gastronomic community as part of Thai culture and lifestyle.
True, the greenery outside, complete with an open “breathing space” with large trees is a sight to behold, especially in an an urban city as Bangkok. The glass walls that gives you view from the inside dining hall of the calming visual treat outside (yes, dining inside is better especially during Bangkok’s super hot summers), the choice of chairs and dining tables, the muted yet bright enough lighting, all makes a wonderful experience. And the food, yes the food is the highlight of it all. A few pics below:

We have brought our visiting friends in this place and they all liked the food and the experience. The price is on the upside, but given that it’s something that’s memorable and enjoyable at the same time, you won’t mind paying the premium. I just hope they get to maintain the quality so we can keep coming back.
