There are some places that nourish the soul effortlessly (on your part, and on the part of the place). VangVieng is one of those places. I can stay at the verandah of my hotel, facing the Mekong river and the massive karst formations across me from dusk till dawn. And that mere act showers me with feelings of gratitude, bliss, of love, and kindness.
VangVieng makes you sad and happy at the same time, but it never makes you feel empty. It floods you with emotions that your eyes burst in inexplicable yearning for meaning. This will be one of the places that I will return to every time I will lose and try to find my center.
