Phobjikha Valley – feels like Switzerland

Written by:

Phobjikha Valley in central Bhutan is probably one of my most favorite places in the country. The place earns the name “Switzerland of Asia” as the scenery is magically beautiful. The walk started off with fine weather, but it rained progressively as we moved on. I thought I will not like the rain, but it was just amazing to the skin.

For one, the terrain is not difficult – it consists of some going down and up, and then plains and up again, and down again.
Second, the scenery is breathtaking: streams, marshlands, mountains, fog, horses, farms, rural homes, and so on.
Third, nature is everywhere, and it feels like an intruder treading through the trek, which tourists obviously use.
Fourth, no one else is hiking there but the four of us.

One of our stops in the hike was on one of the lookouts overlooking the marshland that is the migratory home to the black-necked cranes (Grus nigricollis) and 13 other globally threatened species. The black-necked cranes visit this area from October to February every year before returning to Tibet.
