Enjoying Thimphu

There are no traffic lights in Thimphu’s town centre. Here, a traffic enforcer stands at the center of a roundabout with a station ornately decorated.

There are many things to see in Thimphu.

We went to a stadium where a FIFA-sponsored match was played between teams of young players aged 15 to 19 years old.

In the Royal Takin Preserve, you can see the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. There are also dozens of Samba deer in an enclosed space that mimics their natural habitat.

The Sangaygang Viewpoint makes you see the Thimpu Valley. The viewpoint has some chairs and is referred to as Lovers Lane. Prayer flags and shrubs foreground your view of the valley. The view from here is quite majestic. It also gives you a peek of the current king’s villa.

The giant Great Buddha Dordenma, created sometime in 2010 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the country’s fourth king, King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, sits on top of a mountain.

The Buddha statue is made of bronze and 52 meters in height. Inside the temple, there are 100, 000 8-inch tall Buddhas and 25,000 12-inch bronze gilded Buddhas.

The place offers a magnificent view of the city, as well as a view of one of Thimpu’s most expensive resorts, the 6 Senses.

Then there is also the National Memorial Chorten, one of Thimphu’s most visible signs of Buddhism in Bhutan.
